Naturally powerful, our top 10 hair-friendly ingredients!

June 1 2022 by: Jo M

We use lots of different natural or organic ingredients in our Naturtint range, from floral waters to seed extracts, each chosen for their proven hair and scalp benefits. Below, we’ve delved a little deeper into some of our all time favourites…

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Meadowfoam seed oil is relatively unknown compared with other oils commonly used in hair care, such as coconut oil and jojoba oil. So, although you may not be familiar with it, its unique chemical structure has the potential to moisturise your hair without leaving a greasy residue behind.

Meadowfoam seed oil is a good choice for dyed hair since it’s resistant to oxidation and could help minimise colour stripping compared with other oils. Meadowfoam seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the white, flowering meadowfoam plant native to Oregon, California, and Western Canada. The plant also goes by the botanical name Limnanthes alba.

Shea Butter

One of our superhero ingredients, this is a powerhouse for moisturising your hair and scalp. People with curly or coarse hair textures benefit from using shea butter as a sealant to keep moisture in their hair and increase softness. But that’s not all – shea butter is a great healer for a flaky and irritated scalp, as its anti-inflammatory properties reduce dryness and treat potential scalp damage. Shea butter comes from fat extracted from the nuts of the African shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa) that grow in the Sahel region of Africa, extending from Guinea and Senegal to Uganda and South Sudan.

Baobab Oil

This amazing ingredient is among the few natural oils that contain omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids, which are valuable to your hair and scalp. The baobab tree is not just one tree but nine species in the genus Adansonia. Two are native to mainland Africa, six to Madagascar, and one to Australia. All nine inhabit low-lying, arid regions. In sub-Saharan Africa, you find baobabs rising above hot, dry scrublands and savannas. Over time, it has become known by many other names including “the upside-down tree” and the “tree of life”.

The oil, extracted from the Baobab fruit contains linoleic acid, which helps retain moisture. When used as a hair mask or a leave-in conditioner, baobab oil helps moisturise dry hair and strengthen weak, brittle hair. Another advantage is that the oil is easily absorbed and penetrates right to the heart of your hair follicles. It helps relieve an itchy scalp and ease dandruff as a soothing oil. Baobab oil helps protect your hair from environmental damage, including harmful pollution and UV rays. It also helps repair existing damage. It will leave your hair looking and feeling more robust with a fabulous, glossy shine.

Milk Thistle

Regarded as one of nature’s most potent healing herbs and complementary therapies. When it comes to the hair, it is found that the extract of milk thistle, specifically silymarin, promotes healthy hair by preventing hair loss and strengthening hair follicles.

The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of silymarin cleanse cells and improve cell regeneration in hair follicle bulbs responsible for producing groups of hair strands. This calming and cleansing effect greatly assists the growth of healthy hair. Furthermore, the plant is abundant in phytosterols – a family of molecules found in plant membranes – known to possess anti-ageing powers that hydrate and moisturise the scalp and hair.

Olive Oleic Acid

Olive oil is the fruit of a tree called Olea europaea, and a fat called oleic acid makes up much of olive oil’s composition. Oleic acid has antioxidant qualities and is an effective emollient, which means it has softening qualities, giving your hair the hydration boost it needs to keep it feeling soft and tangle-free.

Quinoa

Quinoa is an ancient South American grain that was pretty well ignored for years, until more recently when it was noticed by the rest of the world and hailed as a “superfood” due to its high nutritional content. It is considered a complete protein as it contains all essential amino acids. It works effectively on dry, rough and frizzy hair to leave it feeling soft, glossy and voluminous. The vitamin E present in quinoa balances the production of natural oils in your hair, making it smooth and easy to brush.

Chamomile

Chamomile, a medicinal plant, has long been used for natural hair lightening and contains three flavonoids called apigenin, quercetin, and azulene. Apigenin and azulene work together to brighten the hair, while quercetin is the one that lightens the hair.

Chamomile has been used traditionally to lighten hair as these flavonoids gradually cause hair to lighten without stripping it of essential moisture. When applied to natural blonde or light brown hair, it gives intense golden highlights whilst enhancing the radiance and shine. Plus, regular use will offer protection against the sun and external aggressors, reducing breakage and increasing strength and flexibility.

Sunflower Floral Water

Sunflower Floral Water is naturally antioxidant and anti-ageing, but it also helps lock in colour and tackles pesky split ends. Floral waters are left over from extracting essential oils in a distillery process. It is more gentle on our hair and skin than essential oils. It still contains high levels of valuable minerals and vitamins to nourish and moisturise our scalp and locks.
