Kerry’s top tips! 🙋‍♀️

November 16 2022 by: Jo M

The lovely Kerry heads up our helpline and since being with us for over 11 years now and having previously owned her own hair salon, there’s not a lot she doesn’t know about hair!

Recently we invited you to reach out if you had any hair-related questions, or indeed if you had any of your own #hairhacks you wanted to share, so below we’re taking a look at some of her most frequently asked questions (and revealing the answers of course!).

ANSWER:

First things first, and we know we always bang on about this, but do your skin sensitivity test for 48 hours before use, even if you have used our products or even that specific shade before.

Then, if the sensitivity test showed no signs of reaction, go ahead and banish those pesky roots.

Ensure your hair is dry and clean, as a build-up of styling products can affect your colour result. We recommend colouring your roots the day after washing, to allow some of the scalp’s natural oils to be produced as this will further help protect your scalp during colouring.

Comb your hair before application, leaving the roots visible: top section, crown and temples, depending on the hairstyle. With gloved hands, apply the mixture to your roots using the applicator brush, ensuring they are completely covered. Do not massage the product through the rest of the hair. Leave the mixture to develop for 30 minutes (40 minutes if you have stubborn grey).

Then, once you have reached your desired development time gently massage your hair whilst thoroughly rinsing it with warm water until the water runs completely clear.

Cleanse your hair with your regular shampoo to ensure all hair colour is removed, then gently squeeze excess moisture from your hair. Then apply the Quinoa Mask as normal.

By only colouring the virgin hair at the root, you avoid over processing the hair. If you were to apply a full head colour every time, the mid-lengths and ends would likely be coloured many, many times before they were cut away, which could result in colour fading or irregular colour, split ends and a dry, dull finish.

In this case, just mix up as much of the colourant and developer as you think you’ll need, in a glass or plastic bowl (rather than pouring the colourant into the larger developer bottle) and apply from there. What hasn’t been mixed up can be saved for the next application, so long as you return the lids immediately and store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat. Just remember to mix the colourant and developer in an equal, 1:1 ratio and never try to store anything that has been mixed together.

And don’t forget, we have 5 Root Retouch Creme shades that have just the amount you need to colour your roots and come with a handy mixing tray and applicator brush!

As long as the colourant and developer haven’t been mixed and you returned the lids immediately after opening, you can save them for your next application. Just store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat. DO NOT try to save anything that has been mixed together.

We know a lot of our lovely Naturtinters prefer to use a box of their regular colour to touch-up their roots and store the remainder for the next time they need it. And that’s totally ok to do – just make sure you always mix the required amount with a 1:1 ration. So, exactly the same amount of colour and developer. Then you can save the remainder in its original container, unmixed. Just make sure the products are immediately sealed again after pouring them.

We get asked this a lot and the answer is a resounding no. The Silver range is designed to tone down brassiness and brighten up the blonde of both natural and coloured hair. It has the same effect on grey hair too. It cools down these shades by simply being their colour opposite.

The purple pigment is one of the main active ingredients, so it’s important that it’s a dark, rich, and vibrant shade of purple to get the best out of its toning and colour-correcting qualities. Check them out here!

ANSWER:

Our range of 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner bars last up to 75 washes, meaning they are super cost-effective and a great alternative to the traditional plastic bottles. But, you need to store them properly between uses to prevent them from becoming too soggy, or even too dry. Solid shampoo bars are activated by water, so it stands to reason that if you let your bar sit in water for too long, it will eventually turn into a wet, slimy mess.

When picking a storage solution for your bars, the two main things to think about are air flow and drainage. Storing your bars in a place with a steady stream of dry air and proper drainage is key to prolonging the life of your bars.

We suggest you invest in a wooden soap dish, which will keep the bar from sticking to your bathroom counters and from developing what Mary Berry would call ‘a soggy bottom.” Plus, they look great on the bathroom shelf, with such a huge variety of woods to choose from.

Of course, that’s no real help if you’re travelling with your shampoo bar – which is one of their amazing benefits, no need to try to cram them into a 100ml bottle for flying. In that case, we suggest you look for a metal tin – we quite often run promotions offering a perfect sized storage tin free with every bar, but if that offer isn’t on when you buy your bar then just ask Kerry to add one to your order.
