It doesn’t take a trichologist (that’s a hair scientist to you and me!) to work out that curly hair, by its very shape and structure, requires different products than straight hair to cleanse and nourish, but did you also know that there are many different types of curls, each with their own unique properties and needs?
Straight hair is Type 1 hair, but curly hair can be Type 2, 3 or 4 hair and within each type, there can be a different grade of curl;
All types of curly hair are more porous than straight hair, because the cuticles are unable to lie as flat, which not only means it is more susceptible to frizz, but it is also weaker, more fragile and prone to dehydration.
And because it takes longer for the natural oils from the scalp to reach the ends of the hair when it is curly, it can lack shine and feel dry to the touch. It makes sense therefore that the tighter and more frequent the curl, the more pronounced these properties are – how you use products on curly hair is therefore as important as what products you use on curly hair.
